Simultaneously a living area and restaurant bar boasting a strong identity, the challenge to rehabilitate the Pibale was huge and had to respect the Landes heritage whilst bringing a new architectural signature.
Between sea and forest
The new Pibale is written in the duality of an almost-intact territory. The Contis village was built in the Lette, a territory that lies between the Atlantic Ocean and the Landes forest. Its seemed obvious that these two landscapes should be unveiled accross the building.
The new Pibale was thought as almost entirely transparent from East to West. The north is closed to shelter it from the violent winds. To the south, it opens in parts to frame the views toward the line of untouched dunes.
At night, when the landscape disapears, the builidng becomes animated, restituting a geometry unveiled by its transparencies. The sky then appears through the small wooden tiles, confering lightness to the buildings.
Originally, the site was made up of a former cowshed where the existing restaurant now stands and of a barn that was demolished to allow for the creation of a new contemporary building that would highlight the volume of the preserved edifice.
The challenge consisted in succeeding the imbrication of a contemporary architecture with a traditional construction and three projects: a house, a boutique and a restaurant.
The new Pibale rises whilst preserving a veritable breathing space vis-à-vis the existing building. Between the two, the living area constitutes the vital space for the cohabitation of both architectures grazing one another via the gateway of the roof that protects the orchestra.
House Boutique Restaurant
The Pibale is a threefold living space. Imitating Contis, la Pibale lives at the pace of the seasons in osmosis with its site, its geographical situation and its climate. The double-orientation rooms allow for an optimal natural lighting and ventilation.
With the exception of the foundations and slab on the ground floor, the entire building is built in wood and heated with wooden stoves.
The ground floor is dedicated to the summer activity of the restaurant and a boutique that becomes an apartment in the winter. On the first floor, the house spreads in a living room-library facing the ocean and two rooms that enjoy the rising sun over the forest to the east. The living room is placed on the second floor, at the highest point of the project. It offers a perch from which one senses al the powerfulness of this territory between sea and forest.
